Hopwood Jr. High School received commendations and positive reviews from the Western Association of School and Colleges committee on Tuesday.

The three-member WASC team consisted of Richard Anbe, chairperson of the accrediting team, Robert Maez and Roberta Abaday. The purpose of the visit, according to Anbe, was to validate what HJHS noted in their self-study report to the WASC team.

“We feel really good with what we see. We feel that there has been growth but we also feel that there could have been more growth,” Anbe said.

Anbe was referring to Hopwood’s need to refine its master plan and action plan that both teachers and their students can follow.

“We worked with the leadership team to do that. Their job now is to complete that action plan and implement it. That is the whole gist here—to have an action plan and then implement it to make it work,” Anbe said.

He explained that the action plan will be sort of an umbrella plan that is teacher-oriented and student-oriented, which both parties could easily follow.

Otherwise he said, the school has been showing progress.

“Their test scores have shown some gain, they have made some strides and have made some changes to the school and that was one of the things that we were looking for. We also found that it was a very nice visit with them and a very successful one. They have made gains in those areas where they needed to make gains,” Anbe said.

Anbe is remaining on Saipan to visit with Marianas High School next week.

He will also pay a visit to the Garapan Elementary School and Gregorio T. Elementary School.
