Ingrid Sanchez and Riza Cano bested five other pairs to rule the Mother’s Day Badminton Tournament held Friday morning at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Sanchez and Cano overcame a first set loss to beat recently crowned champions Babes Cielo and Ana Rose Omori, 17-21, 21-16, 21-18, in the finals.

The Northern Marianas Badminton Federation organized the one-day special tournament, held two days before today’s Mother’s Day celebration.

The loss prevented Cielo and Omori to continue with their winning ways as they both won titles in different divisions in the recently concluded Michelob Ultra Badminton Tournament.

Cielo teamed up with Loyda Ito to rule the women’s B doubles division, while Omori paired up with Angie Ito in the women’s C class in the month-long tournament sponsored in part by Michelob-MARPAC, At Your Service, SaipanCell, JET Holdings, PMIC, Serenity Salon, Elegance Café, NIC, Canton Restaurant, National Office Supply, Makeover Beauty Salon, Megavision, Venus Beauty Salon, Vargas Construction, Esolutions Inc., Philippine Consul General Wilfredo Maximo, and N.C. Matsumoto.

Loyda Ito and Juliet Ramos placed third in the Mother’s Day tournament that followed a knockout, random-draw format.

Other pair of mothers that joined were Shirley Kim and Malou Mendoza, Elma Labuson and Lucelle Lampera, and Emily Vargas and Annette Ta.

Last Tuesday, the NMBF concluded its Inaugural Michelob Ultra Badminton Tournament also at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium where six pairs and one singles player emerged as champions.

Leading the list of winners was Priyantha Wijayaguharatne, who won the men’s A singles then teamed up with John Nguyen to rule the men’s A doubles.

Joseph Santos and Alvin Alvarez ruled the men’s B division, while Cielo and Loida Ito topped the women’s class. Roger Vales paired up with Malou Malasarte to earn the mixed doubles title due to having the higher quotient among the five pairs that survived the single elimination round.
