Various achievements in the CNMI sports scene made headlines this past week with CNMI junior golfer Brentt Makana Salas leading the list.

Salas, who is the son of former Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Carlos Salas and his wife Roxy, will compete in the 2008 Callaway Junior Golf Tournament set this coming July at the Sycuan Golf Resort in San Diego.

Salas will play in the 7-8 age group and follows the footsteps of R.J. Macaranas, who also took part in the same competition last year. Salas qualified after averaging 82.75 during the first two qualifying rounds held last month.

The Saipan Outrigger Canoe Club, meanwhile, overcame fatigue and the rough channel in last week’s 3rd Annual Tinian Crossing.

Despite the wind conditions Team SOCC bested last year’s record of three hours and 33 minutes by reaching Kilili Beach Park in 3:14, which was nine minutes longer than their crossing going to Tinian at 3:09.

In the Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association high school basketball league finals, the Mt. Carmel School Knights completed its amazing run in the boys division, while the Saipan International School Lady Geckos made it three in a row in the girls side.

The Knights pulled off a 64-54 win over the Grace Christian Academy Eagles in the boys division, while the Lady Geckos foiled MCS’ double celebration scoring a 40-34 decision against the Lady Knights Friday afternoon at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, six pairs and one singles player in the seven divisions were crowned on Championship Tuesday in the Inaugural Michelob Ultra Badminton Tournament at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Leading the list of winners is Priyantha Wijayaguharatne, who won two titles in the men’s A singles and doubles events. He defeated Ryan Achas in the men’s singles finals with a masterful 21-5, 21-12 win.

Robert Talavera and Gloria Omechalang, for their part, were hailed champions of the May Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament, while Raphael Zapanta won his third Bing Energy Drink Prince/Princess of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament title of the year.
