3 women in shoplifting cases get probation

Three women who were tagged by police as responsible for a rash of shoplifting cases on Saipan were each sentenced to one day in jail and one year of probation.

Barbie Ann B. Cabrera, Zenita B. Cabrera, and Joanne B. Cabrera entered a plea agreement with the government. They pleaded guilty to two counts of theft by unlawful taking.

Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman accepted the plea agreement and their guilty plea.

Following the plea agreement, Wiseman sentenced the Cabreras to one year in jail, all suspended except for one day, with a one-day credit for time already served.

The judge placed the defendants on one year of supervised probation and required them to perform community service.

He ordered the defendants to each pay a $50 fine, $25 court assessment fee and probation fee.

During the probationary period, the Cabreras are prohibited from going to Joeten Hafa Adai, Dolphin Wholesale and Papaya Store.

According to the plea agreement, on July 29, 2007, the defendants conspired to steal a DVD player worth $69.99 from Dolphin Wholesale Store. On Aug. 27, 2007, the defendants conspired to steal clothing worth $153.93 from Papaya Store.

On Sept. 3, 2007, detectives reportedly conducted an investigation on the rash of shoplifting at stores.

Police said surveillance camera showed that the three women were responsible for stealing assorted clothing from Papaya Store in Garapan.

Surveillance camera also showed that the trio stole a DVD player from Dolphins Store in San Jose.
