SVES tops Parade of Books

San Vicente Elementary School’s dynamic presentation of “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley bested five other participating public and private elementary schools during the 3rd Annual Parade of Books held last Saturday afternoon at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

SVES brought home $700 and a trophy after garnering an overall score of 137 points from the judges, followed by 2nd placer Oleai Elementary School, which presented “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” by Jacob Grimm with 135 points, they received $500 and a trophy.

Third placer Tinian Elementary School performed “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub” by Audrey Wood and received 133 points and got $300 and a trophy.

Other participating schools received a consolation prize of $100 each.

SVES also won the “Best Director award” for their creative directors Kathy Pagapular, Rhonda Camacho, and Diana Felix. They receive a gift certificate for two days and one night stay for two at the Pacific Islands Club.

OES won the “Most Spirited award” and receive a gift certificate for a half day stay at the Pacific Islands Club for 30 children and six guardians.

Other participating schools were Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, which performed “Eagle Series Book Collection” by Georgia Perez; Kagman Elementary School, which presented “Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch; and Grace Christian Academy with a presentation from the book “Peter Pan” by James M. Barrie.

Organized by the Saipan Rotary Club, the contest’s objective was to promote literacy and reading among students.

The participants were judged by their closeness to timeframe, costume depiction, enthusiasm of participants, vocal clarity, and overall adherence to the theme. (Jacqueline Hernandez)
