Attorney General Matthew T. Gregory announced yesterday the official opening of the 25th annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition.

Every year, the best and brightest high school students from Rota, Tinian, and Saipan compete in this prestigious event in an effort to determine which school has the most persuasive arguments regarding the islands’ most pressing issues.

This year will be no different, as the competition theme is: “Should the NMI and Guam Unite as “One Marianas” to form the 51st state of the Union?” Each of the 11 contestants will stand before a panel of judges and attempt to convince the judges that the position he or she takes is the most compelling argument.

Last year’s winner was Cyd Xyrene Gojar Tribiana from Mount Carmel High School. MHS also won the AG’s Cup in 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1994, 1989 and 1984. Can MHS defend its title again this year?

The competition will be held at the Fiesta Resort, Hibiscus Hall on May 23, 2008, at 9 o’clock in the morning. Friends, family and guests are welcomed and encouraged to attend, and the public is invited to see the future leaders of the NMI in action. (AGO)
