The Senate voted unanimously yesterday to confirm the appointment of Janet King to the Northern Marianas College board of regents.

King, who is also serving as an assistant public defender, will fill the unexpired term of former regent Joey P. San Nicolas, who had resigned from the board for personal reasons.

Her term will expire on Sept. 23, 2010.

The Upper House confirmed her nomination at the recommendation of the Senate Standing Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations. The committee said King “has demonstrated the capability of representing objectively the community’s aspirations in issues of postsecondary education.”

“[The] committee has examined Ms. Janet H. King’s education, credentials, community involvement, and the committee is convinced that Ms. King has great interest in serving for and contributing to the success of the Northern Marianas College,” the committee added.

King, who recently came back to the commonwealth after graduating from law school, has also been appointed to the board of the NMI Council for the Humanities, a non-profit institution promoting history, culture, art, and literature.

“I commend Janet for her willingness to serve our community,” Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said when he announced her nomination to the NMC board. “She has a keen sense of social responsibility.”

A former Miss CNMI Universe, King was born and raised on Tinian. Her father is originally from Rota and her mother is from Korea.

She completed her bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College. She pursued her law degree at University of Nebraska College of Law, graduating in 2006. She has passed the bar examinations in Hawaii, Guam, and the Northern Marianas.
