Wabol leads winners in Family Fun Day golf tourney

Jess “Mr. Unorthodox” Wabol won the Family Fun Day Golf Tournament hosted by Laolao Bay Golf Resort last Saturday.

The former Oleai Elementary School principal finished with a net score of 71.4 to nip good friend Manny Alvarez in the individual category of the competition, which is part of the Kagman golf resort’s annual Family Fun Day celebration meant to open the sprawling property to the local community.

Wabol fired a gross score of 81, which minus his double Peoria assigned 9.6 handicap, gave him the score to beat. Alvarez, meanwhile, finished with a net score of 72 built around a gross of 84 and a handicap of 12.

Fr. Manny Corcuera wound up in third place despite matching Wabol’s 81 gross. He, however, was assigned a lower handicap of 7.2 that gave him a net of 73.8.

The championship was worth $400 and a month’s worth of free golf at Laolao for Wabol, who is currently in the Philippines competing in one of the local tournaments there. Alvarez collected $300 and three weeks of free golf, while Fr. Manny received $200 and two weeks of free golf.

Senior par-buster Nick Sablan was the winner in the low gross category, beating everyone with a 77. The five-over-par score netted Sablan $300 and three weeks of free golf.

In the two-man best-ball scramble category, Kim Chang Sik and Jun Park edged Yon Mi Ham and Hyan Jin Jun to claim the $300 first place purse and one month of free golf.

Kim and Park finished with a net score of 69.2 (68 gross and -1.2 handicap) as against Yong and Hyang’s 69.8 (77 and 7.2). Byun Chul Jun and Byun Chung Suk settled for third place with their 70.2 (69 and -1.2). Second and third places took home $250 and three weeks of free golf and $200 and two weeks of free golf, respectively.

The low gross award went to Eun Joo Song and Chang Kyun Kim as the duo registered a best-ball best pre-handicap score of 66. They were given $250 and three weeks of free golf.

Aside from the golf tournament, the 2008 Family Fun Day event also included kite flying, nature ride and magic show, bazaar sale, and an early morning walkathon. Children also had a kick out of the fire truck from the Division of Fire that was present during the occasion.
