American Memorial Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum announced Friday the availability of the recently prepared “Environmental Assessment for Replacement of the Seawall at Smiling Cove Marina, Garapan, Saipan” at the American Memorial Park.

The document, which describes and examines the impacts of the proposed project, will be on public review until June 23.

“We invite your participation in the National Environmental Policy Act process and solicit your comments concerning the proposal and any potential environmental issues of concern to you,” the park said in a statement.

Currently, the sheet pile wall, constructed over 40 years ago, is badly corroded and failing, causing safety concerns. Under the preferred alternative, a new sheet pile wall would replace the existing deteriorated sheet pile wall and 70 linear feet of the concrete woven mattress just south of the end of the sheet wall would be replaced with a riprap rock slope. There would be backfilling and grading to below the mean higher high water. The causeway surface would be graded to the top of the sheet pile wall and capped with a walkway and handrail.

A full description of the construction activities associated with the preferred alternative is described in the environmental assessment that analyzes the preferred alternative and other alternatives and their potential impacts on the environment.

Potential reviewers may obtain a copy of the document from the park visitor center or by calling Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner at 671-234-7607, or by emailing sarah_creachbaum@nps.gov.
