Eighth-grade students from Rota’s Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja recently graduated from the Pacific Regional Training Institute’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

Top Student Awards were given to Nick Mateo and Mariah Barcinas. The Leadership Award was presented to Mariah Barcinas.

The emphasis of DARE—to be safe and free from drugs and violence—is to provide or reinforce the information and skills that enable students to resist peer pressure and other influences in making personal choices.

In addition, the lessons focus on helping students manage their anger and resolve conflicts without causing harm to themselves or others and without resorting to violence or the use of alcohol and drugs. Other emphasis is directed toward helping students develop the skills and qualities needed to achieve good character and citizenship.

This is the third year the PRTI, headed by SFC Maratita, Edward, offered the program to ESFDB students. They joined other public and private schools in Guam, Japan, Hawaii, and Los Angeles in participating in various drug-free, anti-violence, and peace program activities. [B][I](Sgt.
