Police arrested yesterday a 28-year-old man who has a bench warrant for his arrest issued three years ago for not appearing at a hearing in his criminal case.

Police served Sharp B. Ngirutoi with the bench warrant issued by Superior Court presiding judge Robert C. Naraja on April 6, 2005.

In that order, Naraja commanded the Department of Public Safety commissioner to arrest Ngirutoi and bring him to court for not appearing at the arraignment.

In the bench warrant, Naraja imposed a $2,000 cash for the defendant’s temporary liberty.

Ngirutoi was taken to court yesterday afternoon. Naraja set a $2,000 unsecured bond for the defendant’s temporary release. A status conference was set on June 18.

Ngirutoi and two co-defendants were charged with riot and two counts of disturbing the peace in connection with the beating of two men between Jan. 23 and 24, 2005.

Ngirutoi’s co-defendants have already been sentenced after entering guilty pleas.

Ngirutoi has another pending criminal case. The trial is set for next month.
