The last straw

I applaud Rik & Janel Villegas’ well-written article about the mounting frustration over CUC’s lack of accountability. Like them, I want to scream every time my power goes out lately. Once a day was inconvenient enough, but two or three times a day is beyond ridiculous! My family’s life has been severely disrupted by the increasingly frequent power outages in the last couple of weeks. We can’t work, can’t cook, and can’t sleep well without power. My children suffer in the heat and the dark, and I can’t help them. Everyone I talk to feels similarly. Why are we paying these sky high rates for nothing?

The worst part of the recent outages is their unpredictability. If we knew we would be without power from 4-6 pm every day, for example, we could plan around it. When I called CUC yesterday to ask why they weren’t following the load shedding schedule published this week in the Saipan Tribune, the person I spoke to claimed there was no schedule. He said the outages were up to the power plant, and CUC had no control or foreknowledge. Give me a break! Can’t they even organize and coordinate their efforts? Are they really that clueless and impotent?

Saipan is a beautiful island with a rich culture. Most of the people, both locals and transplants, are wonderful. But as many have noted in the past few months, the quality of life here is declining at an alarming rate. For me, the power problems are the last straw.
