The Superior Court has imposed a four-day jail term on a man who beat up his girlfriend in the presence of her children.

Associate Judge David A. Wiseman sentenced Sofiul Alam to one year in prison, all suspended except for four days, for assault and battery.

Wiseman gave the 36-year-old Alam credit for the time he has already served in jail.

Alam was placed on one-year probation and required to perform 60 hours of community service.

Alam was also required to write a letter of apology to the victim and pay a $200 fine, $25 assessment fee, plus probation fee.

During the probation period, the defendant is prohibited from consuming or possessing alcohol or narcotics substances.

The Attorney General’s Office charged Alam with assault and battery, and interfering with a domestic violence report.

He and his lawyer, assistant public defender Janet King, entered a plea agreement with the government, represented by assistant attorney general Rebecca Warfield.

Alam pleaded guilty to assault and battery. The other charge was dismissed.

The plea agreement stated that on Sept. 17, 2007, the defendant beat up his girlfriend by pulling her hair and pushing her to the ground in the presence of her children.

A police officer stated in her report that the victim called police to report the beating in the presence of her children at her residence in Koblerville.

The victim said Alam arrived home drunk and started shouting at her. During their argument, the defendant pushed the victim against the wall, pulled her hair and then pushed her to the ground.

When Alam was about to choke her, she managed to push him away. While she was trying to call the police on the phone, the defendant pulled the telephone away.

She told police it was not the first time that Alam beat her up.
