CUC forms panel to evaluate renewable energy proposals
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will be soon evaluating the proposals of six companies that want to provide renewable energy to CUC.
CUC executive director Antonio Muna said yesterday that the evaluation will be made by a select committee that will include technical, legal and other stakeholders from the community.
Muna said that CUC’s request for proposal closed last May 16. Mailed responses reached CUC on May 28.
“We are currently getting the committee together to start considering the proposals,” he told the media.
Muna identified the six companies as New Seoul Corp. and Commonwealth Industrial Supply Co. Inc., both located on Saipan; OCCEES Ocean Engineering & Energy Systems of Hawaii; Leminiscate Investment LLC of Florida; United Systems Engineering Co. Ltd. of Taiwan; and Lucid Energy Technologies LLC of Indiana.
CUC issued the RFP for development of a grid supply renewable electricity generation projects.
Under the project, CUC expects growth and development of a more comprehensive portfolio for increased energy efficiency on the islands and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
Muna earlier said that Gov. Benigno Fitial wants his alternative energy adviser, Dr. James Quick, to be involved in the selection process.
The renewable energy project, Muna said, is another thing that CUC hopes will happen in the next six to 12 months.
Fitial earlier disclosed that more than a dozen companies have expressed interest in the renewable energy project.
The governor said the firms are interested in submitting proposals across a wide range of green technologies, including win, solar, biodiesel, ocean waves, geothermal, among other things.
CUC in its request for proposals stated that it hopes to enter into long-term performance contracts with firms that will be fully responsible for building and running the utility’s renewable power generation projects.
