The rating system for the selection of the education commissioner was ignored by majority of previous Board of Education members, according to BOE vice chair Herman Guerrero.

“There was a rating system that was already approved by the board for the last selection but three members decided to ignore it,” Guerrero said.

The rating system included the traditional interview with the BOE, the candidate’s collection of letters of recommendations, his credentials, and his written statement on his personal philosophy on education.

“We already had them [rating system] in place but they [previous BOE members] decided to just throw them out…all of it,” Guerrero said.

Former education commissioner Dr. David Borja, according to Guerrero, was hired based on the decision of three majority members of the BOE. “The interview and the rating system were not considered.”

Guerrero said the present BOE will conduct the interview and rating system in its selection of the schools system’s next education commissioner.

He said the weight of the rating system has yet to be discussed among the board for those candidates who have already met the minimum requirements.

He maintained that there are no potential candidates at this point as the position had just been recently announced.

He added that rumors of the board in favor of Rita Sablan assuming the position of education commissioner “is not true.”

“I don’t know where she [a reporter from another local newspaper] is getting her information but all we’re saying is that we do not have anybody in mind right now. But if Rita wants to apply, she can. But she will have to go through the selection process just like everybody else,” Guerrero said.

Deadline for applications is on July 19, after which the board will begin its selection process. The board aims to have a new PSS education commissioner in place by Aug. 1.
