Two-man race in 3000m steeplechase
The CNMI’s very own Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel will see action in the men’s 3000m steeplechase in the 2008 Oceania Championships set this Monday, June 30, at the Oleai Track and Field.
His only competition will be Tim Rogers of Norfolk Islands and with the two having no seed times, there is no telling who among them will finish first in the middle distance event.
Oceania Athletics website, however, has some insight in other middle distance events set for next week in this year’s Oceania Championships.
Australia’s Brendan Whelan, for instance, will again be the man to watch in the men’s 5000m. He is expected be challenged by Tahiti’s new junior record holder Tupuhoe Tahi.
Grergory Fosailafu of Solomon Islands, Skene Kiage of Papua New Guinea, Romeo Makura of Vanuatu, and Lavi Sam of Vanuatu, meanwhile, look as though they could rise to the occasion in the rush for the minor medals.
Another race that is expected to go down the wire is the men’s half marathon. The fastest seed time has been submitted by Tahiti’s Tutea Degage. A close second is Whelan followed by Tony Gordon and Tahiti’s Teioa Izal.
The under-18 men’s 3000m has just two competitors with the only seed time belonging to Guam’s Christopher Magtoto. He will go up against Gregory Fosailafu of the Solomon Islands.
There are only four entries for the women’s 5000m, and none of the competitors has a seed time.
Guam’s Marie Benito and Saipan’s Mamiko Oshima will try to outrun each other in the women’s half marathon, while New Zealand’s Danielle Trevis appears to be a lock in the under-18 women’s 3000m with a seed time of 10:08.38, with the next best seed times more than two minutes slower.
Guam has a good chance of bagging medals with Chantel Torres and Joni Aguon leading them and it will be interesting to see the form of 12-year-old Jessie Anderson of the Solomon Islands.
