Man allegedly beats up his girlfriend during argument
Police arrested on Friday a 25-year-old man who allegedly beat up his girlfriend during an argument over money at their residence on Capital Hill.
Detective Andrea C. Ozawa said a one-year-old child of the victim and suspect was present and crying when the beating occurred.
Emerson Claveria, 25, was arrested for assault and battery, interfering with a domestic violence report, and disturbing the peace.
In yesterday’s hearing, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth Govendo set a $2,500 cash bail for Claveria’s temporary release and appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent him in the case.
Preliminary hearing was set for June 30.
Detective Ozawa said when the victim appeared at the Department of Public Safety last June 17 to file a complaint, a police officer observed redness in her face, arms, neck, and left leg.
The officer also noticed old bruises on the victim’s left arm and left leg.
Police investigation showed that the incident occurred just as the victim and Claveria were about to go out for the suspect’s medical appointment.
The victim and Claveria then started arguing over money. As the argument escalated, the defendant allegedly grabbed the victim’s right arm and pulled her. Claveria also allegedly pulled the victim by the hair, prompting her to fight back by scratching him on the chest.
When Claveria held the victim’s neck, a mutual friend who was present stopped him.
Ozawa said that when the victim tried to call someone on the phone for help, Claveria threw the phone to the floor.
The suspect allegedly tried to fight with his stepfather, who was trying to stop him from harming the victim.
When Claveria went out of the house, he punched a window, shattering it. As a result he injured his hand, police said.
