Sen. Luis Crisostimo formally asked the NMI Democratic Party yesterday to support his bid for delegate.

Crisostimo, a member of the National Democratic Party, is expected to face former Sen. David Cing in the contest for the local organization’s endorsement. Former Rep. Manuel Sablan, president of the local Democratic Party, said the party will have to hold a primary if Cing makes official his reported intent to run for delegate.

“In light of this upcoming election for U.S. delegate, I earnestly submit my intent and desire to run for U.S. delegate under the Democratic Party banner. Now is the time for action, and our priorities must lie with our people—building the Marianas together, one heart, one voice, one Commonwealth,” Crisostimo said in his letter to the party.

His stated priorities, if elected to the U.S. Congress, are cheaper utility service, training for local workers, a better public school system, CNMI’s involvement in the Guam military buildup, and promoting the tourism industry.

The NMI Democratic Party is hoping to get recognition from the national organization in 2009. The party has opened registration for new members. A new set of officers was scheduled to be elected at a meeting last night.

In addition to Crisostimo, those who have expressed their desire to become the Northern Marianas’ first delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives are Resident Rep. Pete A. Tenorio, retired judge Juan T. Lizama, Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Gregorio Sablan, television talk show host John Oliver Gonzales, and businessman Patrick M. Calvo.
