Over 300 applying for 36 slots for cops, firefighters
Over three hundred people are applying for the slots of 20 police officers and 16 firefighters, according to Department of Public Safety commissioner Claudio K. Norita.
Norita told Saipan Tribune that 200 filled up the applications for police cadets, while over 100 submitted applications to become firefighters.
He said more applicants are still coming to DPS.
“Last week we did the agility test for the people who already passed the placement test,” Norita said.
This week, DPS is going to conduct another agility test. Yesterday, the department was set to start the interviews of people who passed the agility test.
“So the process is application, certification from Personnel over to the Northern Marianas College for the placement test. And those who passed will undergo the agility test. Those who pass the agility test will go to the interview,” Norita said.
Once the interview is completed, the successful applicants should pass the background or criminal records check.
The top 36 applicants will then be picked and hired to become police and firefighter cadets.
Another agility test was set yesterday for those who have yet to undergo such test.
“So there is parallel selection process going on. Hundreds…at least 200 for police and another 100 some for fire. We already eliminated a bunch of them during the placement test for English because they failed and we eliminated a bunch during the physical agility test,” Norita said.
Once they’re done with all the selection procedures, Norita said the academy for police and fire cadets may commence in the next two to three weeks from now.
With respect to the hiring of five civilian dispatchers, Norita said he got Friday the list containing nine applicants.
DPS is hiring police officers and firefighters due to the scheduled July 14 deployment of 32 police officers and firefighters to the Middle East. Many positions at DPS are also vacant because of retirement and resignation of officers and firefighters.
