Fitzgerald here for 5-day R&R
The USS Fitzgerald, a 505-foot destroyer, arrived yesterday morning with approximately 300 officers and crew, for a few days of July 4 rest and recreation. This is a return visit for the Fitzgerald, which was here a few months ago.
The ship will have a contingent marching in the Liberation Day parade.
Kyle Calabrese, executive director of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, said that Saipan was chosen as their R&R destination “at the request of the crew, who had a great time when they were last here.”
“After speaking with the ship’s officers and because they were last here so recently, we have decided to not host a welcome reception so that the crew can make the most of their four-day visit,” said Calabrese.
The Fitzgerald will depart on Saturday morning.
The vessel’s officers will be joining the Chamber’s general membership meeting today, July 2, which will start 11:30am at the Hyatt Regency Saipan’s Sandcastle.
Chamber members will also be hearing from Labor Director Barry Hirshbein on the latest update from the Department of Labor, including the emergency regulations that are now in place for the hiring of nonresident workers.
Debbie Wissel, the 2008 OIA Island Fellow, will provide a brief introduction to the new Island Business Link website.
As usual, meeting fees are $15 for members, $20 for guests of members, and $25 for general public. (Chamber)
