Simon Manacop and Gina Sablan were victorious in the June 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament held last Sunday and Monday at the Capital Bowling Center in Garapan.

Manacop won the men’s division of the monthly tournament after rolling a pinfall total of 814 last Sunday, which was good for an average of 203.5 per outing.

The Department of Public Safety officer was feeling it right from the get-go, firing a 217 in his first game and a 234 in his second. He tapered a bit in his third and fourth attempts, knocking down 173 and 190, respectively, but his total score was still good enough to top the two-day tournament.

Jonathan Hensley wound up in second place with a total of 806 and 201.5 average that he also bowled last Sunday. The Coca-Cola Beverage Co. (Micronesia) employee was scorching hot in his first game, toppling 255 pinfalls.

Unfortunately, Hensley followed up that monster score with a so-so 199 in the second game before wrapping up his campaign with mediocre pinfalls of 166 and 186 in his third and fourth games.

Danny Robles’ attempt to catch up with the leaders Monday only netted him third place overall with a total of 778 and 194.5 average. Robles, one of only two keglers who rolled a perfect game at the Garapan bowling alley, fired a four-game series of 201, 169, 236, and 172.

For finishing 1-2-3, Manacop, Hensley, and Robles earned $100, $40, and $25, respectively.

Nick Gutierrez and Lito Teodoro completed the Top 5 with pinfall totals of 772 (193 average) and 771 (192.75), respectively.

Gutierrez had bookend 200-plus throws—217, 161,160, and 234—in his four-game roll-off, while Teodoro recorded a series of 188, 178, 171, and 234.

In the women’s side, Gina Sablan topped erstwhile leader Gloria Omechalang’s opening night score of 714 by rolling a 749 on Monday.

Sablan started out with a modest 177 but heated up with rolls of 203 and 211 before completing her run with a pedestrian 158 to finish with an average of 187.25.

Omechalang slid to second place after her 178.5 average (201, 171, 144, and 198) was topped by Sablan.

Mel Regis took third place with her pinfall total of 704 and 176 average (146, 155, 223, and 180).

Sablan went home $50 richer, while Omechalang and Regis pocketed $25 and $15 for their efforts last Sunday and Monday.

Last Sunday, Raphael Zapanta added the June championship to monthly titles he won in February, March, and May 2008 by rolling 751 pinfalls, good for a 187.75 per game norm.

The Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes as well as the Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes are sponsored by MARPAC. The tournaments are organized by the Saipan Bowling Association.
