The Commonwealth expects to receive over $2 million from the federal government for local housing projects.

According to the Northern Marianas Housing Corp., the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has allocated some $1.37 million to the CNMI under the community development block grant, $583,000 for housing, and $63,000 emergency shelter projects.

These allocations are for program year 2008.

To access the funds, the administration through NMHC must submit a grant application package that includes an action plan and an official House joint resolution authorizing the CNMI government, through Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, to apply for and receive the grants.

House Speaker Arnold I. Palacios has pre-filed the resolution. The House is expected to vote on it during session today.

Administered by HUD, the community development block grant provides eligible communities with annual direct grants that can be used to revitalize neighborhoods, expand affordable housing and economic opportunities, and improve community facilities and services.

The program is designed to benefit low to moderate-income persons. More than 80 percent of CNMI residents are considered persons of low- and moderate-income under HUD standards.
