WIA kicks off summer workshops yesterday
The Workforce Investment Agency began workshops at American Memorial Park yesterday for a second batch of 266 local students who will hold summer jobs through its Summer Youth Employment and Training Program.
A majority of the participants showed up yesterday to learn more about their summer jobs.
During the morning workshop, participants were oriented on the WIA summer youth program by Vince Merfalen. He gave a presentation on customer service, telephone etiquette, grooming and appearance, and work ethics. The afternoon session featured Richard Hamilton of the U.S Department of Labor.
WIA will be farming out the students to various government and private agencies on Saipan. Some of the agencies include divisions of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the Public School System, Palms Resort Saipan, Department of Public Works, Northern Marianas College, Ace Hardware, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Bank of Saipan, Marianas Visitors Authority and a number of others.
Interns referred to Fiesta Resort & Spa will be assigned as telephone operators, front desk clerks, sports and recreation staff, wait staff, bellman and others.
Interns referred to the Marianas Visitors Authority will be assigned as administrative assistants, marketing assistants, research assistants, and others.
After a successful completion of the employment and training program workshop, participants will receive a certificate of training and will finally begin work on July 28 until Sept. 5, 2008.
Participants will earn $4.05 an hour during the six-week period.
According to WIA, all summer participants are required to attend the assigned workshop training.
