A night of art, music, and sake
Revolving Restaurant 360, in association with Ashley Moffatt Uys, is opening a gallery style art show featuring the works of renowned Japanese landscape artist Hiroshige, on July 31 and Aug. 1, 2008, between the hours of 5pm and 8pm.
“Please join us. Our chef has prepared an array of special complimentary Asian appetizers, enjoy a cup of sake on us, listen to the tantalizing violin music of Ao Zhang, and take a tour of the ‘Floating World of the Ukiyo-e’,” said the restaurant in a statement issued yesterday.
Hiroshige (1797-1858), is widely considered as Japan’s premier landscape artist, and his intricate prints are made from wood block carvings. Hiroshige differentiated himself from his contemporaries by eschewing the traditionally popular genres of Kabuki actors and women to concentrate on landscapes.
The opportunity to see the works of this great artist is presented by Revolving Restaurant 360 and curator Ashley Uys.
Uys is the owner of Fu Dogs & Qi, Saipan’s newest art and antique gallery, opening soon on the ground floor of the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe. She has been a Corporate Art Consultant working with NBC, Xerox, Edison, TRW, Bank of America, and a host of other well known corporate names, assisting them with their art needs for 25 years. She brings her knowledge and passion for art to this show, as she shares her personal collection of these fine prints.
Uys has been an avid collector of Hiroshige’s work dating back to a childhood friendship with architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who insisted that any home he designed have locations for at least three of Hiroshige’s pieces.
“I am looking forward to sharing Hiroshige’s museum quality art with Saipan,” said Uys. “We have many Japanese visitors on this island and the views of ordinary life in the 1800s represented by Hiroshige’s art brings me closer to understanding their heritage.”
