Results of probe on the cause of MGM fire may be known today
The Department of Public Safety may release today the result of the fire investigators’ report on what caused the fire that engulfed the MGM garment factory in Chalan Piao last July 9.
DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro told Saipan Tribune she will release the final report to the media today, Thursday.
Asked whether the investigators already determined the origin of the fire, Ogumoro replied: “I hope so. I hope it’s in the report. That should be finalized tomorrow.”
Ogumoro had promised to release the report since Monday.
Last July 14, DPS commissioner Claudio Norita said fire investigators were still determining what caused the blaze. Norita told the media at that time that investigators have not completed their investigation yet.
“No word on the cause yet from the investigators. My understanding is that maybe in the next couple more days we will be able to conclude the investigation,” Norita said.
The fire resulted in the evacuation of over 200 factory workers. No one was hurt as the factory was closed at the time.
MGM guards also immediately alerted the workers, who were then sleeping at the time when the fire broke out at 4:52am.
Initial investigation showed that the fire started in the southern end or at the production line of the single-story tin-roofed factory.
