WIA trainees learn the ropes at MVA
Five trainees from the Workforce Investment Agency recently gained valuable experience working in different divisions within the Marianas Visitors Authority.
Marfiana Mosses was assigned to the Accounting Division and learned how to receive customers picking up payments, distribute purchase orders and scan documents for accounting.
“I was nervous on my first day because I thought I would be learning things that wouldn’t help me in my life, but I learned a lot from everyone in the Accounting Division. We were one heart and one family,” said Mosses.
Tracy Kikku, assigned to be an administrative assistant for the Executive Division, learned a lot during her short period with MVA. She admitted that she did know what the CNMI had to offer as a destination, besides the festivals and other events. She was exposed to secretarial work such as filing and answering incoming phone calls. Besides her secretarial duties, she also enjoyed greeting visitors at the airport.
“Now I understand what a secretary does and I understand how hard MVA works to make our place beautiful,” said Kikku.
Odesa Sansi, assigned as the marketing assistant for the Marketing Division, learned a great deal by assisting with some marketing projects. As demanding as it was, she was happy knowing that her supervisors ranked her satisfactory.
“My word of advice to the individual who is placed in this division would be to cherish the experience and soak it up like a sponge because a job opportunity like this comes along only once in a lifetime,” said Sansi.
Kelvin Simina was assigned to the Personnel & Administration Division as an administrative assistant. He was responsible for a wide variety of administrative duties including answering incoming phone calls, greeting and receiving visitors, assisting with the inventory of supplies and equipment and filing documents.
“What I really like about working at MVA is that everyone was fun to work with. I thank my supervisors for giving me this opportunity to learn new things,” said Simina.
Misshen Rupurei was a research assistant in MVA’s Research Division. She learned the process of editing custom declaration forms, scanning them and importing them. She also had the opportunity to update hotel listings in the CNMI.
“The most important thing that I learned while working here was that tourism is really important and MVA makes it their business,” said Rupurei. “MVA works hard to keep tourism alive in the CNMI!”
MVA’s outreach programs educate students through employment experience at MVA and expose them to the CNMI tourism industry.
“We learned a lot from our trainees and they learned a lot from us. I am happy to know that our trainees gained more than occupational skills here at MVA. They also learned the value of the CNMI tourism industry and the impact it has on our economy,” said MVA Personnel manager Polly Deleon Guerrero. (MVA)
