Wet field postpones BSML finals
The 2008 Budweiser Saipan Major League again encountered some problems Monday night when Mother Nature postponed Game 1 of the best-of-five finals between pennant champion and undefeated Rock Steady and Ford Rangers.
SML commissioner Tony Rogolofoi said, for a change, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is not to blame for the postponement as rain showers the past few days left the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field unplayable.
“I called the gym staff early in the day to see if the field was playable and was told that it was still wet. We will start the game tomorrow (Aug. 12), weather permitting,” he said in an email to the Saipan Tribune.
After power outages wrought havoc to the Budweiser-sponsored league the past couple of weeks, Rogolofoi is praying for sunny weather in the days ahead so that the championship will start and continue unimpeded.
“We will just have to play it by ear for now. Hopefully the sun will shine on us today (Aug. 12) so we can proceed with the games.”
In related news, the SML Fall League has scheduled a meeting tomorrow, Aug. 14, 5:30pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.
Rogolofoi said the topics to be discussed will include the league’s opening date, league format, eligibility documents, fees, and other related matters.
He said interested teams are asked to bring rosters and, if possible, entry fee of $800, payable to Saipan Major League.
The SML has also scheduled a meeting for its Masters League on Sept. 4 starting at 5:30pm at the Ada Gym conference room.
The agenda will be the upcoming Masters League for players 35 years old and over, which is penciled to start in October.
Teams are asked to start securing sponsors. Entry fee is $800 and is payable to Saipan Major League.
