A three-vehicle smashup occurred at an intersection along Beach Road, Susupe, during an outage yesterday morning.

No one was injured, but one driver complained of neck pain. The other driver was cited for failing to yield to a motorist who had the right of way.

No police officer was guiding the traffic flow at the intersection when the accident occurred at 11am, Saipan Tribune learned.

Two of the three drivers blamed the outage and lack of a police officer manning the intersection as the main factors that triggered the crash.

Witnesses said a silver Nissan Sentra being driven by a 65-year-old woman was heading south and was approaching the intersection of Beach Road in front of the Saipan World Resort. The Nissan Sentra car was following two other vehicles that had turned left, going in the direction of the former Nauru Building.

The Nissan Sentra car collided with a silver Toyota Echo being driven by another woman who was traveling along Beach Road and was heading north. The woman’s Toyota Echo ended up hitting another Toyota Echo, driven by a man who had stopped his car while preparing to turn right going north.

The 65-year-old driver of the Nissan Sentra said she did not see the approaching car as she was following the two other vehicles that had just turned left. Her car’s front bumper was severely damaged. The two other vehicles had slight damage on the front bumper’s left side.

The female driver of the Toyota Echo complained of pain in the neck as a result of the impact.

At least five police vehicles were spotted parked at the San Jose-Microl intersection shortly before the Susupe accident.
