Over a thousand alien workers on Saipan, made up mostly of Filipinos and Chinese, flocked to the Job Fair Guam at the American Memorial Park Amphitheater on Saturday afternoon.

The workers are seeking high paying jobs on Guam, which is anticipating a boom in the economy, particularly in the construction business, due to the impending U.S. military buildup.

The job fair is held to help the workers, who were heavily affected by the ailing CNMI economy.

They are also threatened to be dislocated by the ongoing federalization of the CNMI labor and immigration, which will be implemented in June next year.

One of them, Edwin SF. Legacion, used to work with the UIC garment factory, which has already closed shop.

He has been on Saipan since 1991.

Legacion, who is now working at another company, wanted to apply as a mason but could not register due to his work schedule.

He’s still hoping the organizers of the job fair could accommodate him.

Those who have registered included cooks, waiters, truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, carpenters, and even janitors.

The workers have submitted application requirements through the United Workers Movement, which will present the documents to the Guam Contractors Association.

The GCA tasked the UWM to prepare the list of applicants.
