8 games set for opening day of Oceania youth caging
Eight matches are lined up for the opening day of the 7th FIBA Oceania Youth Tournament at the University of Guam Fieldhouse this Sunday.
All eight squads participating in the annual Oceania caging which will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 will play on Day 1.
The CNMI Women’s Junior Nationals will meet Tahiti in the women’s Pool A match at 1pm on Court 1, while powerhouse Australia will battle Palau in the men’s Pool A game on Court 2.
At 3pm, Tahiti will face Fiji in the men’s Pool A on Court 1, while Palau cagebelles will test the mettle of Papua New Guinea players on Court 2 for the women’s Pool B game.
Australia’s Boomers will clash with Fiji at 5pm in the women’s Pool A game on Court 1, while Papua New Guinea will take on New Caledonia in men’s Pool A match.
Action in the opening day will resume at 8pm to give way to the opening ceremonies of the tournament at 7pm.
The Rufino Aguon-mentored CNMI Junior Nationals will challenge host Guam in the men’s Pool B match on Court 1 after the opening rites, while Guam cagebelles will battle New Caledonia on Court 2 for the women’s Pool A game.
Preliminary games in the men’s and women’s divisions will continue on Sept. 29 and 30 before players take a break and participate in a 3-on-3 tournament and cultural performance on Oct. 1.
The quarterfinals will start on Oct. 2 with all four teams advancing to the next phase of the tournament. The semifinal round is set for Oct. 3, while the gold medal game and the consolation match will be played on Oct. 4.
At the conclusion of the annual caging, FIBA Oceania will name the All-Star Team which will be competing in a tournament in Australia next month.
