I give my full support to the proposed Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. I believe that we have a great opportunity in front of us that can greatly benefit us economically and financially. There are many reasons why I support the idea of a proposed monument, but my number one reason is how much it can benefit education in all areas.

Our children and all the other generations to come can have a better knowledge of the Marianas Trench in an educational perspective rather than a political perspective. There is so much to gain from this and many things yet to be discovered. By having a monument, we can open doors, not only for our poor economy, but for many students who may have an interest in marine studies or plan to pursue a career in marine studies.

The phrase “federal takeover” has been heard all over. Our island is suffering through many crises, but many times have been given help by the federal government. They have helped us with education, health programs, and more.

Those who are against the idea of the Mariana Trench Monument complain about not being able to access the ocean waters to fish and that the federal government is trying to run our islands. For one thing, not many people have traveled or fished out at the Northern Islands for years and with the high fuel prices, who would spend hundreds of dollars worth of fuel to go out to the Northern Islands? Not much.

If the Mariana Trench Monument will not benefit our poor economy, then what will? We’ve been given so much help by the federal government for many of years. They play a great part in the success in our education and other programs on our islands that are important to us. The government has greatly benefited from federal funds. We need help to solve our economic crisis and the federal government is our helping hand. So, before you make your decision, whether or not to support the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, find out for yourself the facts and the benefits that will move our economy toward success and not just follow someone else’s opinion.
