Ogumoro returns to post as DPS range master
Ambrosio T. Ogumoro has been reinstated to his post as CNMI Range Master for the Department of Public Safety. He re-assumed his position on Monday, Oct. 6.
As Range Master, Ogumoro is in charge of the armory and firearms record and the firearms training for all law enforcement agencies in the CNMI.
“I am grateful and honored for my re-instatement as the CNMI range master,” Ogumoro said in a statement.
Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja overturned in September Ogumoro’s unlawful possession of ammunition conviction. Naraja also ordered that Ogumoro’s conviction record be erased. Ogumoro claimed that the cases filed against him were the result of a vendetta carried out by the previous DPS leadership.
Since coming on board Monday, Ogumoro said he started off with the inventory of all DPS-issued firearms to include civilians to ensure accountability.
As for the DPS-issued firearms that were issued out to other agency as a temporary loan, Ogumoro said he issued a recall order for these firearms to be returned to DPS Armory effective yesterday, Oct. 10, 2008.
“The physical inventory will allow accurate accountability to DPS, and will allow me to assess the memorandum of agreement with these agencies,” he said.
Ogumoro said he has already inspected the firearm training facility in Marpi and has determined that some improvements are needed to bring the safety operation up to standards.
“For this reason, I have temporarily closed the target training range. Also, I’ve discovered that there was no inspection conducted to the two existing shooting gallery here on Saipan. I will be working closely with firearms instructor Dave Hosono to correct these deficiencies,” he said.
His priority at the moment is to meet with the CNMI Training Coordinator to consolidate all firearm training and extend the same training opportunity to Tinian and Rota. He believes this will save the government thousands of dollars.
“At a later date, I will schedule to met with the directors of the islands to assist them in the construction of their firearms training facility,” he added.
“I would like to extend a sincere appreciation to office Jason Tarkong and Dave Hosono and other officers for maintaining the marksmanship training for the past few years. I would like to inform DPS Police personnel that what’s done is done. I would like them to know that I hope they learned something from it and need not be intimidated, and that I am here for them. I believe that a leader is hardworking, self-assured, in charge of his emotions, unselfish and never afraid to fail. Everyone is going to fail at one time or another. The key is how you come back from the failure. As a leader and the goals that I’ve set forth I am committed to assist our government and DPS,” Ogumoro said. (Saipan Tribune)
