Gov. Benigno Fitial paid tribute Tuesday to the memory of Sgt. Julian Manglona, an Army reservist who died last week while training for deployment to Kuwait.

In a statement, Fitial said the death of Manglona, 39, is a blow to the entire CNMI.

“I pray for soldier Julian Manglona and his family,” said Fitial. “The family has my sympathy and support. This not just a loss for the family; it is also a loss for our community and the United States armed forces. I join the people of the CNMI in mourning the loss of this young man.”

Manglona was on a 6-mile run on the grounds of Fort Hood, Texas, last week when he collapsed. He later died at a nearby hospital after comrades attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

According to news reports, Manglona had served in a reserve unit assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and was called to active duty in July. He was slated to begin a one-year tour of duty in Kuwait later this month, his second deployment to the Middle East. On Saipan, Manglona was a police officer.
