The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has received proposals from two companies that are interested in overhauling two engines at Power Plant 1 in Lower Base that were left undone by a previous contractor.

CUC executive director Antonio Muña told Saipan Tribune that they received two proposals and that one is much higher than the other.

“It looks like the lower proposal may be responsive. But we need to sit down with them and ensure that we have an understanding of exactly what we are looking for and there’s no misunderstanding,” Muna said.

CUC put out in the latter part of July the emergency Request for Proposals for the overhaul work on power engines no. 5 and 7.

CUC is looking at generating 22 megawatts from these engines when overhaul work is completed.

CUC initiated the emergency RFP after it terminated the contract of the previous contractor, Guam-based DCM Group, in July 2008 after the company reportedly failed to repair the generators as required by the $5.1 million deal.

Muña said the power engines working at Power Plant 1 right now are engines 3, 6, and 8.

“Right now we’re looking at 15 megawatts essentially from those three engines or about 5 megawatts from each,” the official said.
