Three in a row for Wabol
Jess Wabol continued his dominance in local golf tournaments, winning the Inaugural Off The Beaten Path Golf Tournament Saturday at Lao Lao Bay Golf Resort.
Last month, Wabol prevailed in the 3rd Annual Kristo Rai Parish Golf Tournament and the 13th Annual Club at the Hyatt Golf Classic.
“The breaks are going on my side,” said Wabol. “Also, winning one tournament after another gives you confidence every time you join a tournament.”
Wabol shot a 1-over par 73 at the Kagman course, surviving the damp greens and intermittent rain to top the Championship Flight of the fundraising tournament, which proceeds will be used to help CHC purchase a CT scan machine and hyperbaric chamber.
“Weather is always a factor in a game and you have to live with it. Just focus on your shot and make necessary adjustments if needed,” said Wabol who caught another break, winning the raffle’s grand prize—a roundtrip ticket to Manila courtesy of Asiana Airlines.
With the wet weather Sunday morning, golfers in other flights struggled with most of them carding gross scores of 80 and above. Some were even worse, tallying in the 100s.
Jeff Taylor tied Wabol with the lowest gross, but lost the tiebreak on the scorecards.
Nick Sablan was two strokes behind Wabol and Taylor, nailing a 3-over par 75 to finish third.
Seung San Choi and Manny Alvarez were the two other golfers who joined the Championship Flight firing a 78 and an 82, respectively.
Ben Jones won the A Flight, making a 78 for a two-shot win over Yasu Irinaka, who scored an 80. In third place was Ed Cho, who recorded an 82.
Juan Lizama matched Jones’ score to prevail in the B Flight. He was six shots ahead of second placer Ray Aldan, who carded an 84. Pete Arriola settled for third with his 85.
The C Flight title went to Sinwon Kang, who posted a 97. John Iguel was second with his 104, while John Paul Flores finish third, making a 109.
The Ladies and Seniors flights had a double-peoria format with the Top 3 winners decided via the gross scores.
Terry Attao beat four others in the Ladies Flight with her net 78.40. Attao, who had a 24.60 handicap, fired a gross 106. Finishing second with a net 80.60 was Lorraine Babauta, followed by Yang Kyunga (81.40), Shirley Jones (82.80), and Louie Oakley (87.80).
Richard Jones took the Seniors Flight title with his net 70.20. He defeated seven other golfers in his flight. Bob Hudkins (75.40) and Min Hi Won (75.60) completed the Top 3.
