‘Learn how to do business with federal govt’
The U.S. Department of Defense’s lead official for the Guam military buildup has urged the CNMI government to link up with the University of Guam on a training program for doing business with the federal government.
David Bice, director of the Joint Guam Program Office, told local lawmakers on Friday that there are many ways the local private sector can take part in multibillion-dollar military realignment on Guam and the rest of the Marianas.
He said the government could help prepare local businesses by working with UOG on having the Procurement Technical Assistance Center provide extension services on Saipan.
Last month, the Department of Defense awarded a grant to UOG to establish the training center. The purpose of the PTAC is to guide local businesses in obtaining federal, state, and local government contracts, and thereby encourage the use of local small businesses during the military buildup.
Rep. Madeleine Bordallo, shortly after the nearly $400,000 grant award was announced, said the PTAC “will leverage the capabilities of the Small Business Development Center at UOG and will arm Guam’s businesses with the tools to be successful bidders on federal contracts.”
She added, “University of Guam President Dr. Robert Underwood has emphasized the need for greater professional development for the military build-up in areas such as contract specialists. The PTAC at the University of Guam is an opportunity to help achieve this goal and to develop Guam’s professional workforce and our business community.”
