The CNMI Emergency Management Office is warning people to be careful when going into the water today due to strong waves and rip currents.

In a small craft advisory it issued yesterday, EMO said that fresh trade winds will produce high surf on east facing reefs on Saipan, Tinian and Rota yesterday and today.

EMO said the small craft advisory remains in effect until 6am this morning.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled by EMO, high pressure over the western north Pacific will promote fresh to strong trade winds across the Marianas last night and early this morning.

Surf will diminish slightly on east facing reefs on Saturday.

East winds between 20 to 25 knots with gusts of up to 30 knots are expected offshore.

EMO is advising the public that wave conditions support stronger or more frequent rip currents.

“Always have a flotation device with you in the water.” it said. (EMO)
