Presence at the table

Unlike each of the States, the Commonwealth has only one seat at the table in Congress, and so it is critically important for that seat to be filled anytime there is an official meeting. Also, given the enormity of the task ahead for our Delegate to Congress, it makes sense for him to get a running start by attending the upcoming gathering of newly elected congressional representatives and delegates to be held in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 17. Since the election has not yet been certified, the question becomes who should attend that meeting on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Although all of the absentee ballots have not yet been counted, it seems quite improbable that Mr. Pete A. Tenorio will defeat Mr. Gregorio C. Sablan (Kilili). As the putative winner of the election, Mr. Sablan should be given the benefit of any doubt that may exist, and should attend the meeting in Washington next week. In the event that Pete A. turns out to be the winner, Mr. Sablan could easily transition any matters to Pete A. There would be very little to transition at that point in time, and Mr. Sablan is certainly more than capable of doing so in the unlikely event it comes to that. We should all support Mr. Sablan’s efforts to represent us beginning with upcoming meeting.
