John Mongami didn’t lose a game in taking the USS Peleliu Club Monday 8-Ball Tournament last Nov. 17.

Mongami sent two-time defending champ Dean Santos to the losers’ bracket, got by Taylor Watanabe, then defeated the sports bar and watering hole’s owner Ken Phillips in the final.

Santos had topped Phillips in the winners’ bracket, while Watanabe beat Ron Chisato and Annie Tesiro.

In close games, Phillips eliminated Tesiro, won his rematch with Santos, and squeaked by Watanabe to reach the final.

The Monday tournaments start at 8pm, according to Phillips, “but USSP tries to allow for ‘island time.’ If somebody calls ahead, we try to fit them in,” he said, “unless we’ve already finished the first round when they show up.”

“Sometimes we can’t win,” he added. “This time a couple of players called, but four people got tired of waiting and walked out. The week before three players were a few minutes too late.”

In related news, the Marianas Turkey Shoot starts at 7pm on Nov. 26, and Phillips thinks it’s a good idea to be on time for that one. “We’ve filled the 16-player bracket in previous years,” he said, “probably because the winners get frozen turkeys on top of the cash prizes.”

Roger Espiritu and Rick Rengiil took the turkeys last year, with Rengiil’s only losses coming in their head-to-head matches.

Because of the $15 entry fee, a 16-player field would yield awards of $120, $75, and $45 for first, second, and third places.

USSP’s 8-ball tournaments are double elimination (two losses), played by Billiards Congress of America rules.

For more information about the USSP’s 8-ball tourneys, call Rose or Ken Phillips at 233-1984. “And call ahead if you’re going to be late,” Ken Phillips added.

Monday is the last chance to get 8-ball tournament practice for USSP’s annual Marianas Turkey Shoot. (USSP)
