Inter-Godfather’s hoists its third title in 2008
Inter-Godfather’s outgunned MP United-PTI in a shootout, 5-4, to top the 2008 NMIFA Men’s Football Fall League Sunday at the Oleai Sports Complex Filed.
CNMI National player Peter Loken scored the winning goal, hitting one to the upper right corner to give Inter-Godfather’s its third championship this year. Inter outlasted Onwel, 1-0, in the finals of the President’s Cup Football Tournament in March and FC Arirang, 2-1, in the 2008 Saipan Cup in August.
Against MP United-PTI in the finals, Inter-Godfather’s drew first blood leading 1-0 at halftime. A late goal from one of the new players of MP United tied the game and sent the championship match to a shootout.
The first three players from each team to step up to the penalty box scored to keep the game in a deadlock.
Inter-Godfather’s could have seized the lead, 3-2, but a key save from Inter goalie John Lee was nullified as he stepped on the line early.
Lee redeemed himself in the ensuing defensive play, diving for the ball and preventing the fourth MP United shooter from making a goal.
Loken sealed the win with his goal on the upper right corner.
Four teams battled for this year’s championship with the list including Independence Will Bill’s and Multinational FC. The four teams played in a double round-robin regular season and had a crossover semifinals format in the playoffs.
Inter-Godfather’s was seeded first in the playoffs, faced Multinational FC, and won the semifinals, 1-0.
The third-seeded MP United-PTI pulled off a 2-1 upset over the second-ranked Will Bill’s in the other semis pairing to set up a title duel with Inter-Godfather’s.
Will Bill’s settled for third place after blanking Multinational FC, 2-0.
