EMO warns of high surf this week
The CNMI Emergency Management Office issued a high surf advisory yesterday, warning the public of hazardous waters, particularly in north- and east-facing reefs.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan Guam, EMO said north to northeast swells generated by a series of storm systems have moved into the local area. These swells will generate high surf on north and east facing reefs of the Marianas through much of the week.
It said the public should expect hazardous surf of 10 to 12 feet today and the next few days. The surf will remain hazardous at least through mid week and the high surf advisory was in effect until 6pm Thursday.
A high surf advisory means that hazardous surf and dangerous rip currents will affect north facing reefs. Expect hazardous surf of 10 to 12 feet along north facing reefs during the advisory period.
EMO strongly advises the public-especially fishermen, tour operators, divers and swimmers-to stay out of the water, or avoid venturing exposed beaches, especially along north facing reefs where rip currents will be life-threatening, while the advisory is in effect. (EMO)
