The Senate has offered its congratulations to the newly elected leaders of the Republic of Palau.

The lawmakers adopted a resolution extending their congratulations to Palau President-elect Ngiraked Johnson Toribiong and Vice President-elect Kerai Mariur on their election to office.

The two were elected on Nov. 4, 2008, after securing 51 percent of the votes.

Toribiong and Mariur will be sworn into office on Jan. 15, 2009. They will succeed incumbent President Tommy Remengasau, who was ineligible to run because he has served the maximum two terms allowed, and incumbent Vice President Elias Chin, who was this election’s runner up for president.

“The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Palau share close political, economic and historical ties as Pacific island neighbors,” states the Senate resolution. “The people of the Commonwealth join their Palauan neighbors in commending Ngiraked Johnson Toribiong and Kerai Mariur on their election to Palau’s highest posts.”
