Nineteen Grace Christian Academy students took part in a ping-pong clinic conducted by members of the CNMI National Table Tennis Team last Tuesday at the school’s Navy Hill campus.

Members of the gold medal-winning team in the 2006 Saipan Micronesian Games—Budhi Gurung, Luke Lu, Liang Wei Bin, and Su Yong Dong—taught the students some rudimentary table tennis skills utilizing three of GCA’s ping-pong tables.

The four ping-pong players were joined by 2008 Micro Games women’s gold medalist Jean Shi, Marianas Amateur Table Tennis Association president Steve Lim, former Shaanxi Provincial Table Tennis Team coach Mark Ma, and Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino ping-pong club official Alfred Yue.

According to Gurung, MATTA members and their counterparts from TDHC gave the students tips on how to properly hold the ping-pong paddle, how to hit the ball, as well as the proper table tennis stance.

Yue, for his part, said he just loves the sport of table tennis and wants the islands’ youth to learn it.

“Ping-pong is an international sport good for all ages and gender. Last month, there was a table tennis team visiting us from Japan, the youngest member was 64, more women than men, and they all played as well as us,” he said.

Gurung added that he hopes the GCA clinic will be the start of MATTA’s commitment to hold more such events in the future to develop younger ping-pong players in the Commonwealth.
