Record-setting feats top list
The events that made last week’s headlines are for the books.
Leading the list was the 2nd Annual Hell of the Marianas Century Cycle, which had Eli Torgeson winning back-to-back championship in the 100-kilometer race.
Torgeson did not only top the race for the second straight time, he also shattered the record he himself set during the inaugural event last year.
Torgeson’s time of three hours, two minutes, 22.62 seconds in the second “Hell” broke his own mark of 3:20:33. The Commonwealth Health Center anesthesiologist finished the race more than 16 minutes ahead of his closest pursuer.
William S. Reyes Elementary School and Koblerville Elementary School will have their names written on elementary soccer school league history after ruling the Inaugural 2008 NMIFA U12 Interscholastic Football League
The Kingfishers downed Koblerville in the girls’ finals, 2-0, while the Umangs won the boys’ title after beating Saipan International School, 2-0.
Saipan had its soccer events for schools in the past, but they were only a one weekend tournament, while the one coordinated by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association and the Public School System was the first organized soccer league in the elementary level in the CNMI.
Pilipino Contract Workers Association also had its first league through the 2008 PILCOWA-San Miguel Beer Basketball League played at the CIC Centre Basketball Court in Garapan and earning the distinction of being the first champion of the PILCOWA caging was Diamond Auto Care.
It was an exciting finish for Diamond, which needed a basket from a player who had been missing all night to finally end its thrilling title showdown against MIGS.
Sonny Ranola canned a side jumper in the last four seconds of the second overtime to lift Diamond to a 101-99 title win over MIGS.
Jess Wabol added another record in CNMI golf when he notched his fourth RGA Cup.
Wabol won the 2008 RGA Club Championship ending his five-year drought. Wabol, a gold medalist in the 2006 Micronesian Games, won his third RGA Cup in 2002.
The Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization held its first junior varsity basketball league for girls this year with Kagman’s Lady Ayuyus taking the inaugural crown after beating Southern’s Manta Rays in the finals, 65-36.
Another first this year was the 2008 NMIFA Women’s Futsal Fall League played for more than two months at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium.
Six teams joined the inaugural women’s futsal league with Wild Bill’s winning the championship after shutting out Marianas Technical Institute in the finals, 3-0
Northern Marianas Badminton Federation had its second team tournament dubbed 2nd Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament with the Green All-Stars besting seven other squads for the championship.
Out of the 42 games, the All-Stars won 30 and lost 12.
