55 drunk drivers arrested in Dec.
A total of 55 persons were arrested for drunk driving last December on Saipan, bringing the total number of DUI arrests in 2008 to 219.
Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro told Saipan Tribune yesterday that the checkpoints set up by DPS in December resulted in the arrest of five persons for drunk driving.
Ogumoro said two other persons were arrested for DUI at checkpoints set up by the police on New Year’s Day.
Nine persons were killed in vehicular accidents on Saipan last year. As of yesterday, DPS had yet to confirm as to how many of those victims died in alcohol-related crashes.
Ogumoro said she is trying to get the records for 2007 with respect to DUI arrests.
DPS reported in late November 2007 that beginning January up to October that year, there were 227 DUI arrests on Saipan, one on Tinian, and one on Rota.
In the same period in 2006, 354 people were arrested for DUI in the CNMI and there was one pedestrian who died as a result of an intoxicated driver.
In 2005, there were 414 DUI arrests in the CNMI and five alcohol-related fatalities.
