The opening of the 2009 season of the Saipan Little League Baseball has been moved from Jan. 10 to Feb. 14.

SLLB president Michael Borja in a telephone interview said that during a meeting Tuesday night at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, the SLLB board decided to push back the opening date.

“Holiday season had just past and most of the teams have yet to secure requirements for the 2009 season, so we decided to give them more time to prepare and complete the needed documents,” Borja said.

Borja added they are moving the opening date of the SLLB 2009 season to give way to the visiting LG Twins of Korea who are training at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

“They will be holding their last training session on Feb. 13 and I think the ballfield will also undergo repairs so it’s best that we pushed back the opening of the 2009 season,” Borja said.

But the SLLB president said that teams have only until Jan. 24 to submit the league’s requirements. Managers and coaches are also asked to attend a meeting on the same date at 9am at the conference room of the Ada Gym.

Borja said this season’s SLLB will feature a total of 32 teams.

The Majors, which will be played at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield, will have the most teams with 15.

The list includes the San Vicente Athletics, As Matuis Twins, Bank of Saipan Red Sox, DPS Dare, Dragons, Hustlers, IT&E Dolphins, Jets, Kagman Little Lions, the Tanapag Little Falcons, McDonald’s, Ol’Aces, Shell Suns, Survivors, and the Tanapag Braves.

Major’s defending champions Patriots moved up to the Junior League, which will also have the Fielders, Kagman Lion Hearts, Ol’Aces, San Roque D-9ers, and the Red Sox.

The Senior League has five teams in the Fielders, Jets, Lion King, Ol’Aces, and the D-9ers.

The Big League will have six teams in the D-9ers, Fielders, Hustlers, Ol’Aces, Falcons, and the Aztecs.
