Water shortages in several areas on Saipan remain a big problem among residents, according to the Office of the Mayor.

“We are doing everything to address this problem,” said Mayor Juan B. Tudela during a news briefing yesterday.

Tudela said he has been authorized to collect water from two designated areas.

Accordingly, there are only two areas on Saipan that the supply of water has quite improved at present. These are Susupe and Chalan Kanoa, while supplies in other areas have not been enough.

The Mayor’s Office is using only one truck to serve areas where the water supply is very weak.

“The truck is doing this on a daily basis,” the Mayor said.

Meanwhile, the office is also faced with problems in maintaining roads, primarily in interior areas around Saipan.

“We are doing the secondary road repair. It’s very often that [every week], there is a request for repair especially on rainy days,” he said.

Tudela said their equipment are already quite old and they have to purchase spare parts just to make sure that these will not pose any danger.

For instance, he said that they have only one boom truck to haul junk cars for disposal.

“The boom truck is no longer reliable at this time so it would take 30 more days before we can go back to hauling junk cars. We will not risk our personnel with an unreliable truck,” he said.

His staff has also been undertaking bush cutting and tree cutting along the island’s main thoroughfares.

Tudela reminded the public that trees should not be cut down if there is a power line nearby but they can request the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to do so.
