Co-ed soccer organizers to hold clinic Sunday
Organizers of the 2009 Co-ed Soccer Spring League will be holding a camp this Sunday at the Navy Hill Field.
David Khorram, who is organizing the league along with Jaime Saiki and Angelo Villagomez, said the camp aims to introduce newcomers to the sport.
“We are very delighted to see more new players registering for the co-ed league and we will be holding a clinic for them in preparation for the opening of the league,” Khorram said in a telephone interview with Saipan Tribune.
“We had an almost equal number of male and female players wanting to be part of the co-ed league. So far we have 75 players who had already registered,” Khorram said.
Khorram added they have yet to decide on the kickoff date for the co-ed league, but they are looking to open shop this month or early next month.
Games will be played every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and will start at 5:15pm at the CPA Field. But Khorram said schedules are tentative, as they will depend on the number of teams.
“It will be great to have six teams for this year’s co-ed soccer league,” Khorram said.
CNMI National Coach Nick Swaim will be conducting the clinic from 4pm to 6pm.
Swaim is expected to teach participants drills on dribbling, passing, shooting, and other basic skills.
Before starting the league, organizers will have veteran players scattered among the participating teams and joining new players.
The league will limit the number of “A” players per team, and the role of these proficient players will be to teach and to support the development of the less skilled players.
A players are those with the ability to play in the men’s or women’s league, or have significant experience playing soccer. B players have some soccer experience and with moderate stamina, while C types are those new to soccer, or completely out of shape.
Each team in the co-ed league will be composed of 11 players.
