Preparations are now underway for the 28th Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival to be held April 23-26.

Arts coordinator Lucille Ayuyu said, however, that they are still organizing the composition of a preparatory committee for this year’s event.

Even the venue is still being planned, as well as the theme for this year. A possible venue is the American Memorial Park in Garapan.

Last year’s event, which was chaired by Ramona Rebuenog, was held at the Civic Center along Beach Road in Susupe.

Rebuenog was named in October as acting director of the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture.

In a few days, Ayuyu said, they will be opening their office for registration of interested participants.

“But right now, we are still trying to organize ourselves, finalize the programs and activities and set up the registration form, fees and everything that needs to be done to make this year’s successful again just like in the past,” she said.

Participants from Guam, Palau and Marshall Islands, as well as from Tinian and Rota will be invited to the event.

This annual event started as a small arts fair in 1981 and is now considered the largest arts festival in Micronesia.

It is intended to provide opportunities for everyone to be exposed and learn different cultural and artistic values.

Activities include arts-in-education workshops, presentation of local arts, cultural performances, traditional preparation of food, traditional games, exhibits of arts and crafts, parade of cultures and traditional canoe building workshops.
