A new gymnasium is needed to support and promote athletic activities in Rota, according to Sen. John Ayuyu, floor leader of the 11th CNMI Youth Congress.

Such a gymnasium, he said, would also serve the people in Rota during assemblies and it could also be used as an amphitheater.

Ayuyu thus introduced YC Resolution 11-11, which was unanimously adopted during the second regular session on Jan. 17, to request the 16th CNMI Legislature to appropriate funds for it.

The youth senator wants the gymnasium to be erected at the Rota High School campus that would eventually serve the students as a safe sports and recreational center.

Ayuyu said that the old gymnasium on Rota has not been properly maintained and had suffered damages due to typhoons.

He said the gym’s windows, floor, and roof are leaking and are unsafe for any kind of activities.

Ayuyu said that the lack of proper sports facility would often force residents to hold activities in the outdoor or in unsafe field, not to mention the uncooperative weather condition and other improprieties.

Although, they are creative enough to resort to other available venues, Ayuyu said the residents, especially the students, often risk their safety and health.

Ayuyu stressed that such a dangerous situation can only be remedied by putting up a modernized sports facility or gymnasium.

He said Rota public schools can facilitate friendly and healthy intramural sports competitions if only they will have a well-maintained gymnasium.

“The fundamentals of sports and physical activities encourage discipline and builds character and teaches the youth important virtues,” Ayuyu stated in his resolution.

He also said sports teaches respect, sportsmanship, courage, as well as proper calisthenics that are very important for young minds.

He said this is also a way of reducing diseases and illnesses if the community will go hand in hand in promoting physical activities.
